I had heard mixed reviews about this film, but, personally, I loved it. And not just for the raw, hot, grunting, gay sex either. And not just for the giggle-inducing, double-entendre dialogue in the opening scenes either.
Actually, the gay sex was kept pretty confined to one scene. Primarily, the film told a heart-wrenching love story, and set it beautifully in a backcountry paradise. I had no trouble getting into the characters and their story. I bawled like a little baby by the end of the movie... though I must admit that the subject is one I'm particularly sensitive to. (I just cannot comprehend homophobia/gay-hatred/gay-bashing. It's just so pointless and tragic.)
Heath Ledger did an amazing job. I was less impressed w/ Jake Gyllenhaal, but he did an a'ight job nonetheless. Michelle Williams of Dawson's Creek fame (aka, the girl Heath Ledger impregnated while making this film - method acting much?) did surprisingly well.
Oh, and here's a bonus tip in case it helps you to decide whether you should see this film: you get to see Anne Hathaway's boobies, which came as a complete shock to me, since the last movie I know of that she was in was THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2!!! Go Anne Hathaway!
Actually, the movie loses points for Anne Hathaway's goofy hair transformations over the course of time and for the crappy job the make-up artists did aging the actors. Other than that, I thought it was a moving, aesthetically inviting, thought-provoking film. Final grade: A-
Final sidenote: Shannon prefers to call it "Bareback Mountain." Which do you think is funnier, brokebutt or bareback? I much prefer brokebutt for its overt crassness. :-)

Bareback is so much better.
I was pleasantly surprised. I did think the pacing at the beginning was a bit slow, it almost felt like their relationship came from nothing and was based on pure physical needs rather than a romantic connection...but afterwards the characters developed well.
I was a little choked up at the end too.
Heartbreaking.
Do you think that Jake G.'s character was gay bashed or was that a glimpse in Heath's head...
Wasn't sure of the hubcap story as being the truth or the breif image.
Spoiler-alert! Stop reading if you haven't seen it!!
I think Jake G's character was totally gay-bashed. C'mon, how crappy of a lie was the rim to the face story? It was more like a crow-bar to the face.. We all wondered whether wifey was in on it. She seemed so sinister when telling the lie.
Spoiler alert my ass. Everyone has already seen it. Its one of those movies like Home Alone or Titanic. Everyone has seen it.
Anyway. I don't think we know how the guy died. Its like alternate endings. Kinda like blade. How did he defeat the blood god.
Bet you never saw a Blade Brokeback mtn. comparison before. By the way, bareback isn't as funny as brokebutt. Brokebutt is way more Beavis.
Brokebutt...Bareback...6 to one, half dozen the other. My question is what kind of dumb ass names a movie about gay cowboys "Brokeback Mountain", you’re just inviting jokes. As for the movie, I would have to say somewhere between an A- and a B+. A little slow at times, but in all a good story. I think Anne Hathaway’s hair rocked, especially in the 80’s. A lady at my work, who is from Wyoming, was blown away by Heath Ledger’s performance. His speech and demeanor reminded of every guy in the town where she grew up. Also, her husband and mine made the same observation that never occurred to me…Heath character was truly in love with Jake’s, but Jake just liked man lovin’.
I agree with the slow pacing, however, I found it to be intentional... a deliberate tool used to help create the relationship. The slow pacing also kind of parodied the way the relationship would unfold. If you are interested in checking out the latest version of the movie, Dumbfuck Mountain, check out QQflyboy.com for the movie poster. It's classic.
I didn't mind the slow pacing of the movie. I thought it was intentional to give the movie that laid back country feel and allow for the development of the relationship... for example:
Jack: "(whistling) Gee Ennis.. not a whole lot left for two young, virile cowboys to do out here except... eat beans."
Ennis: "I'm sick of beans!! Get that fine ass over here!"
Allison - Broke-butt mountain suggests that maybe there's a be-hymen that was broken.. I think that's why I like it so much. Imagine the be-hymen breaking!
Shannon - Hey cheater, you can't get your friends to come on here and skew the poll results! Cheater cheater!!
Housekeeper - I don't agree. I think Jake G.'s character loved Heath's too, I just think that he dealt w/ their conundrum a little differently than Heath did. Heath was a join the priesthood kind of gay guy, while Jake was a let's be out and proud kind of guy. When he saw Heath would never agree to his Brokebutt Ranch fantasy, he had to come up w/ a viable alternative, so he started shagging other guys.. and even trying to transfer the Brokebutt Ranch fantasy to include other cowboys... but I think the fact that he wanted to be scattered at Brokebutt Mountain shows he was happiest when he was w/ Heath.
That movie was like tragedy on top of tragedy. How sad was it that his parents wouldn't scatter him where he wanted?! I just told myself that mom and Ennis would go up and scatter Jack on their own once pappy died.
i cant see it.....i like heath too much...
hehe my last word verification was "somekfor" hehe
Anne Hathaway's boobies?!?! WTF why the hell are they not advertising this!?
I havent seen it. Maybe everyone in the gay world has seen it. I vote for BrokeButt Mountain. That's what I've been calling it since I first heard its title (before I even knew it was a gay flick). Brokeback is just calling out for a conversion to broke-butt.
Shannon, aren't all gay relationships based out of pure physical needs than a romantic connection?
-brad
All I have to say is...
Blokebutt Mountain
Just your gay relationships, Brad.
Randi - you like Heath too much to pay to see him in a movie? To see him in love scenes w/ Michelle Williams? What do you mean, I'm confused..
I cant see him in that movie...not making sweet love to another man....or being in love with another man...it totally ruins my fantasies about him...
Brian, no, "Marriage" is a myth used to keep the working class in a weakened state. :)
Uh...I like Bareback Mt. Randi you must see it! I never thought I would like Male on male sex so much..it really turned me on! MEOW!
